Geometry Wars 3 is an arena shooter wrapped around a series of 3D objects. For those curious as to how it stacks up to its forerunners, though, I can say that just because GW3 is easily the weakest entry in the series, that doesn’t mean it’s a bad game. For the sake of this review I’ll be approaching GW3 mostly from the latter perspective, because every game element feels like it’s been re-thought from the ground up to present the series to a new audience.

There’s two ways to view Geometry Wars 3– either as a new game in the Geometry Wars series, or as its own individual game, free from expectations based on previous series entries. After all this time waiting a new Geometry Wars is a real treat rather than simply the latest game in the series, and if Geometry Wars 3: Dimensions is more a franchise rebuild than a true sequel it’s still a fun little twin-stick shooter. Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved 2 came out a little over six years ago and how on earth have six years gone by since then!? So, in short, go buy this game and enjoy it along with me. This player is currently in the top 100 on Classic Mode and needs to get back to playing in order to establish his Geometry Wars dominance. If you don’t like the new gameplay style, you can still play Classic Mode, which brings back the flat map and gameplay from GW2 with the addition of gaming modes like King, Evolved, Pacifism, and Waves. There is a new level of challenge in this latest game that wasn’t there in previous titles, and you can tell that the team behind GW3 is intimately familiar with the franchise. I was nervous about the three-dimensional environments at first, thinking that they would take away from a game that I personally invested hundreds of hours into, but the maps are seamless. Sierra has absolutely outdone themselves with Geometry Wars 3. This keeps me endlessly pursuing the next progressive level. I find myself constantly restarting the game over and over again when I know I won’t come close to beating my original high score. This game is a monumental time sucker! It’s perfect for logging on for 10 to 15 minutes and trying to overtake your latest high score.

You can upgrade your drones and their attacks using points gained throughout each level. Your drone can either defend, attack, or collect geoms for you while you are playing, increasing your score and adding much needed assistance. GW3 also adds the ability to bring a drone along with your spaceship. Each level has a leaderboard assigned to it, so you can track how your score compares to the scores of others worldwide or those on your friends list.
You can max out at three stars or move on to another level and attempt to attain stars from them. The maps also have a star system where you attempt to reach a certain level of points in order to gain a star from that map. While GW2 played on a flat surface, in GW3 each map is extremely unique and features its very own challenges. With updated graphics and revamped levels, GW3 is even more enjoyable than the first two games combined. 25th, Sierra released Geometry Wars 3: Dimensions onto the Xbox One and Playstation 4 for $14.99 USD. Players competed for the highest scores and followed the leaderboards to maintain their dominance. Geometry Wars 2 brought updated graphics, leaderboards and new game modes to the table and became a bit of a cult classic amongst XBL Arcade gamers. You can also earn blasts that will destroy all of the shapes on the screen, should the game get overwhelming. When destroyed, the shapes drop a geom that will increase your score multiplier. Each shape has its own unique quality and responds on the screen differently. You have to avoid touching the shapes while shooting at them. The premise of Geometry Wars is that you play as a pixelated space ship, moving around your map and shooting at various shapes as they spawn all around you. Geometry Wars gained so much popularity that Bizarre Creations decided to release Geometry Wars 2 for the Xbox Live Arcade on the Xbox 360. Geometry Wars introduced players to a Robotron-type, retro, space-shooting game where you destroyed shapes while avoiding getting hit by them. In the days of the original Xbox, Geometry Wars was part of a bonus mini-game you could play within Project Gotham Racing 2. I had fully intended to write this review earlier, but I have been sucked back into the world of Geometry Wars and I’m having a hard time admitting I have an addiction.
